News and Reviews: 19th June 2011

18 June 2011.Punk By The Sea Festival at South Parade Pier,Portsmouth.Featuring Buzzcocks + 999 + Night Of Treason + others.

Its easier and easier to go and see bands in different cities these days so i got a nice comfy
coach from Victoria to Portsmoth with Greyhound.
Met up with me old mucker Lewis.
Leather seating, free wi-fi,power sockets, air con and free newspapers.
Lots of leg room too as they have less seats on a coach than their rivals.
They also name their coaches after womens names taken from popular American songs.
So you have Billy Jean,Jolene,Peggy Sue and others.A nice touch.I was on Proud Mary.

Its a sunny but very windy day down by the Portsmouth waterfront.
The venue has seen better days but it is perfect for this gathering of over 600 punk fans.
First band i see are Goldblade who are really good.Singer John Robb does a great job.
Their set included "Fighting In The Dancehall" and "Jukebox Generation " as well as
a cover of "Oh Bondage Up Yours" dedicated to Poly Styrene.
Next up are Vice Squad with singer Beki Bondage still looking good.
Then Splodgenessabounds who did a fun set which included "Two Little Boys"
and "Two Pints Of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps Please".
Then it is Peter And The Test Tube Babies who play a set full of rude lyrics.
Then over to see second stage headliners Night Of Treason.
They have dropped all the cover versions and its an excellent set of their own
material that will be on the album "Gentleman And Hooligans".
The crowd by the stage are really enjoying it.Lots of dancing.

Then back to main stage for 999 who play a great set inc
"Inside Out","Hit Me","Emergency","Nasty Nasty","Homicide" and "Im Alive".
Then its headliners the legendary Buzzcocks.
A full 70 mins of punk gems one of the other.
Loud, fast and furious.Lots of jumping around in front of the stage.
Set inc "Boredom","Fast Cars","Autonomy","Breakdown","Promises",
"Love You More","What Do i Get?" and encores "Harmony In My Head",
"Ever Fallen In Love" and "Orgasm Addict".A fantastic set.

This was a brilliant little festival with a great atmosphere and no trouble.
Credit goes to the first time promoter of this event who is a normal punk fan who put on a festival
with some help from family and friends for the music he really loves.
www.punkbythesea.co.uk will have events in December and June every year from
