News and Reviews: 19th January 2020

Saturday 18 January 2020.
CHASE RICE live at Shepherds Bush Empire, London.
Level 3 is closed tonight so maybe 1200 are here.
OWEN DAVIES arrived on stage at 7.45pm and played for 30 mins.
Owen is a young male country singer-songwriter from the UK who sung some decent tunes.
He told an amazing story where he was busking in Liverpool and Chase Rice walked past him,
liked what he heard and asked him " would you like to support me at Shepherds Bush Empire".
MADISON KOZAK arrived on stage at 8.20pm and played for 30 mins.
Canadian female country singer-songwriter played a decent set.
She said she has been living in the Nashville the last few years.
Songs like “Little Bit Of You”, which neatly segues into “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” are about her own life experiences. The unreleased “Loud House” discusses growing up in a large family, “Phases” is about the boy that broke her heart (“this one’s for you Kyle”, she says, still smiling) but best of all is “First Last Name” the one she dedicates to her dad. Truly heartfelt, to the man who started her off on this path, and and a nice cover of “Take Me Home, Country Roads” gets all
the crowd singing along loudly.
CHASE RICE arrived on stage at 9.20pm and played for 1 hour 40 mins.
Chase Rice is an American country music singer-songwriter who has had success back home.
Chase arrives on stage wearing a baseball cap, and is the spitting image of Prince Harry.
He has a great band who all hail from South America , and were much more rockier than expected.
Chase has nice clear catchy vocals and he has two songs with Jack Daniels in the title which is great by me.
He gets a girl on stage for some flirting during the song "Ride".
He sung his big country hit "Eyes on You" that had all the crowd singing along.
He also sung "Cruise" which was the big country hit he wrote for Florida Georgia Line.
After the first mega hit of his career “Ready Set Roll” from back in 2013, he’s done. But not before he goes down to meet his people, sign autographs, shake hands and have selfies with most of the front rows. All the while the band plays a metal riff, as if they are finally glad to. The band finish the song and join him in the pit to sign stuff and pose for selfies.
He played Bush Hall last time and it is pretty clear Chase Rice will be getting bigger success in the future.
A really good gig that ticked all the right boxes.
Full Chase Rice setlist played tonight...

SIDHU MOOSE WALA plus support djs live at Shepherds Bush Empire, London.
30 year old Indian (Punjabi) male rapper & actor plays a sold out London show.
It is a Live Nation promotion along with BBC Asian Network.
As it is quiet for major acts in January i always end up going to two or three shows that
i would never bother with if they were on at any other time of year when there is more to choose from.
The venue is totally rammed solid and the atmosphere is just incredible.
As expected the crowd is over 90% Asian.
First of all we get a couple of djs who hype the crowd up perfectly.
We get a dance competition - female from West London v male from East London...she won.
SIDHU MOOSE WALA eventually arrived on stage at 9.50pm for his 70 mins set.
He must think he is an Indian version of Axl Rose or Peter Doherty as he was due on at 9pm (50 mins late).
Sidhu is wearing an orange turban and the crowd are going wild.
He has a dozen of his mates and a couple of personal security standing on stage by the dj console.
Like the support acts , he sings along to the dj console backing tracks.
His Bhangra type music went down well with the very lively dance crowd.
A decent enough show in its own way.
"In the 1970s , we supported all the major rock bands".
"We supported Aerosmith 40 times and they never ever gave us a soundcheck".
" I hated flying so i drove my motorcycle from city to city".

The chorus of Green Day's new single has a Gary Glitter/Joan Jett sample.
‘Oh Yeah’ is the third song released from the upcoming Green Day album ‘Father of all Motherfuckers’, due 7 February. The two previous tracks ‘Father of all Motherfuckers’ and ‘Fire, Ready, Aim’ were released late 2019.
In 1977, The Sex Pistols "Never Mind The Bollocks " album title caused a big fuss that ended up
in a court case.Professor James Kinsley,Head of the School of English at the University of Nottingham, who argued that the word "bollocks" was not obscene, and was actually a legitimate Old English term formerly used to refer to a priest, and which, in the context of the title, meant "nonsense".
The Sex Pistols / Virgin Records won the court case.
Now a band brings out an album titled "Father of all Motherfuckers" and nobody blinks an eyelid.
Happy Birthday to my lovely mum who is 86 today.

Wednesday 15 January 2020...I went to two events tonight...

Masayoshi Nojo 'Under the Moonlight' - Private View - JD Malat Gallery, 30 Davies Street,
Mayfair, London W1.
Around 100 guests at this French owned gallery.
This is Masayoshi Nojo first solo show outside of Japan.
This exploration of time and memory is achieved using an innovative variety of mixed media and techniques, with each stage meticulously executed. Firstly, Nojo prepares the foundation of his canvas with a marbled layer of acrylic paint, reminiscent of the river in Kōrin’s seminal work Red and White Plum Blossoms. Nojo then photographs, selects, and carefully adjusts each image before transferring the image to the canvas via silk screening – allowing the marbled layer beneath to shine through and to create an abstracted, contemporary twist on the work. Finally, layers of aluminium and silver foil are applied to the canvas, highly symbolic and recreating a sense of intangible distant memories.
Complimentary Pommery champers for all guests.
Visit their website here for more info.

Tuesday 14 January 2020.

Resolution Festival at The 100 Club continues...
Resolution, a ten-day festival of all things punk, is returning yet again to it’s spiritual home, the 100 Club, for the 6th year running in January 2020. Resolution Festival celebrates the bands and musicians who kick started the punk movement and those who continue to breathe new life into it today.
Tickets for the whole festival available at £85.
For the first time the festival will be 14+, anyone under 18 needs to come along with an adult.
Visit The 100 Club website here for more info and to buy tickets for all 100 Club shows.
They have replaced their iconic sign over the entrance with a nice new one.
Sunday 12 January 2020.
THE UK SUBS + Red Light Rebels live at The 100 Club, London.
The Subs are still fronted by punk rock legend Charlie Harper who is aged 75...yes 75.
The Subs are playing a few UK shows before yet another full European Tour.
I saw them a few times in the late 1970s including when they supported Iggy Pop in 1979.
UK Subs had 6 x Top 40 hits in the UK during their heyday period - 1979 to 1981.
Every year the band are playing over 100 shows all over the world.
Tonight is the last night of this years Resolution Festival at this venue.
It is always special to be at a punk gig at this home of punk.
My friends always get me to look at the Steve Jones photo on the wall opposite the stage
where I am in it front of stage from The Sex Pistols legendary gig here in Sept 1976.
Gaye Black ex The Adverts was here.
RED LIGHT REBELS arrived on stage at 8.30pm and played for 40 mins.
The band from Cheltenham played a good uptempo set that featured tracks from their
EP "Rewind Erase" and their album and they fnished their set with a great track called "Joyride".
UK SUBS arrived on stage at 9.40pm and played for 65 mins.
Charlie Harper arrives on the stage to big cheers and looks more like a 50 year old rather than 75.
It soon gets live lively down the front as fans are jumping around and a few are getting on stage
for a dance and to sing along with Charlie.
The 23 song setlist whizzed along as no song lasted more than three minutes.
Highlights included great versions of "Warhead" and "Teenage".
They dedicated one song to Lemmy.
Charlie is holding lyrics in his hand for a couple of rarely played songs but they get thrown
in the air halfway through.
Good to see The UK Subs still keeping punk alive.
UK Subs setlist played tonight included...
You Can't Take It Anymore

This week ,Patti Smith gave a very nice and rare interview to promote her book on The Jimmy Fallon Show
in America.
But the real draw is her performance. Smith, backed only by her bandmate Tony Shanahan on electric piano,
sang a stunning version of Neil Young’s searching, devastating 1970 classic “After The Gold Rush.”
I saw Patti Smith play her first two London shows...

THEO VON live at Shepherds Bush Empire, London.
Theo Von is an American stand-up comedian, podcaster, television personality, host, and actor.
In December 2018, Theo Von and comedian Brendan Schaub started a new podcast called The King and The Sting. At the podcast's release, The King and The Sting debuted #1 on the iTunes Podcast charts in the United States and also reached the top charts in the United Kingdom, Canada, Spain and Australia.
He was born in Covington, Louisiana, USA.
As it is a comedy evening, it is stalls seating tonight.
Theo is not a mainstream name in the UK but this was the last of THREE sold out shows at this venue.
We had two support acts.
An English guy from Thornton Heath who had some funny bits in his 20 mins set.
An American guy who is his tour support, did a good, but crude in places 20 mins set.
THEO VON was on stage for around 60 mins.
Theo arrives on stage and has a jaw dropping stage production...just a stool.
He starts off with a good routine about his trademark "gender neutral mullet" hairstyle.
How he was quite happy with folks taking one look at his hair and not trusting him with any responsibility.
Theo has a full Southern drawl and does self-identify as "white trash", which forms the material in his set.
Theo says "I wear that name as a badge of honour. I wouldn’t have any of the stories I have today if it
wasn’t for growing up in Covington".
He says "dude" and "shit" a lot and routines on family, friends, school and Mexicans are pretty good.
A heckler down the front put him off his stride a bit but recovered from that ok.
It was a decent show and the crowd loved it.
More full page ads in some newspapers as Live Nation are desperately trying to flog MADONNA tickets.
The shows start in two weeks time at The Palladium and are nowhere near a sell-out.
Hardly surprising ,with the mental ticket prices of over £450 down the front and hospitality much more.

Very sad news that NEIL PEART has passed away.
Neil Peart, the drummer of iconic Canadian band Rush, has died at age 67.
The influential musician and lyricist died Tuesday in Santa Monica, California, after having been diagnosed
with brain cancer.
I saw Rush over a dozen times since Hammersmith Odeon in 1977 which was on their debut UK tour.
Will rock legend TED NUGENT ever play the UK again?
It has been over a decade since he last appeared on these shores.
Maybe his outspoken love of guns and hunting has put promoters off booking him.
I saw him at least once on every one of his UK tours.

Happy Birthday to ROD STEWART who is 75 today.
Not the best past fortnight for Rod as this week he was planning to go into hospital for knee
replacement surgery and he is due in court next month after a New Years Eve scuffle in Palm Beach.
The scuffle happened after Rod was told by security "I'm afraid you are not on the guest list".
Police reviewed security camera footage and took two signed sworn witness statements confirming that Sean Stewart had pushed security guard Mr Dixon and alleging that they saw Sir Rod punch him.
The video footage showed that Sean and Rod were "the primary aggressors", according to the report.
Mr Dixon wishes to go forward with prosecuting both Stewarts for battery.
Police said in the report that there is enough evidence to charge Rod with one count of simple battery.
It is unclear if Sean will also face charges, although the arrest documentation lists him as a co-defendant.
Sir Rod was issued with a notice to appear at the Palm Beach County Criminal Justice Complex on Feb 5.

Thursday 09 January 2020.
Happy Birthday to guitar legend JIMMY PAGE who is 76 today.
Wednesday 08 January 2020.
Happy Birthday to ROBBY KRIEGER ex The Doors who is 74 today
Robby is an American guitarist and singer-songwriter best known as the guitarist of the rock band The Doors; as such he has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Krieger wrote or co-wrote many of the Doors' songs, including the hits "Light My Fire", "Love Me Two Times", "Touch Me", and "Love Her Madly".
Robby was the guest on Steve Jones LA Radio Show last week where he talked about the upcoming
docu film "Break On Thru" which is in selected UK cinemas on 12 Feb 2020.
David Bowie would have been 73 today.
Happy Birthday to DAVID JOHANSEN who is 70 today.
Thinking back to their great reunion period when i saw New York Dolls play Morrissey's Meltdown Festival
at The Royal Festival Hall in 2004 which was followed by three great albums and they pretty much came
back every year until 2011 so i could see them a few more times.

Tuesday 07 January 2020...I went to two events today...
3pm to 4.30pm
TUTANKHAMUN at Saatchi Gallery, Chelsea, London.
In residence at the Saatchi Gallery from Saturday 2 November 2019 - Sunday 3 May 2020, the exhibition commemorates the 100th anniversary of the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb, and is the final chance to see these glittering world heritage artefacts before they return to Egypt forever.
Explore the life of King Tutankhamun, and the storied discovery that captivated the world, through more than 150 authentic pieces from the tomb - three times the quantity that has travelled in previous exhibitions - more than 60 of which are travelling outside of Egypt for the first time.
The third of 10 cities to host TUTANKHAMUN: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh the London showing follows record-breaking stops in Los Angeles and Paris. In Los Angeles the exhibition was among the most successful in the history of the California Science Centre, while in Paris it became France's most attended exhibition of all time with over 1.4 million visitors.
My parents visited the exhibition in London in the 1970s when it drew over a million visitors.
It was at The Saatchi Gallery in April 2016 when i was at the opening night party for THE ROLLING STONES
"Exhibitionism" exhibition , which was a mega event where all the band members turned up along
with many other celebrity guests.
Visit their website here for more info and to buy tickets.
Your ticket is timed entry so that the queues are evened out.
The tickets are on the expensive side as it is £28 to visit during the week and a bit more at weekends.
TUTANKHAMUN is the biggest and most popular "must see" exhibition currently showing in London.
Like The Stones exhibition there is a lot to see in the dozen rooms over the two floors.
The stunning artefacts include many marked as " first time out of Egypt".
There are videos showing the original discovery.
Arguably one of the most famous – and spectacular – archaeological discoveries of all time, Howard Carter’s excavation at the Valley of the Kings in 1922 propelled a short-lived and perhaps rather politically unimportant pharaoh into the history books. Tutankhamun may have died while still in his teens but his tomb had been packed with beautiful objects befitting his royal status – and, unusually, had escaped detection by robbers. Howard Carter had discovered a treasure trove of ‘wonderful things’.
I was lucky to visit Egypt a decade ago and went to a few different areas which included where they
found Tutankhamun. On that day there was a random sighting as a convoy of half a dozen limos pulled up.
I looked over to see who it was and one of them was TONY BLAIR who was The Middle East Envoy.
Really great to see al these famous artefacts again.
At the end of the exhibition was the massive merch store where you can buy a mug for £12.
6pm to 8pm
THE LANDMARK HOTEL - press showcase - 222 Marylebone Road, London NW1.
This five star luxury hotel is situated on The Marylebone Road which is one of Londons busiest and
most polluted three lanes each side road, but that is forgotten when you head inside this stunning hotel.
In the heart of London’s fashionable Marylebone, this deluxe hotel has a stunning glass-roofed 8-story atrium with towering palm trees, an award-winning restaurant & bar, luxurious bedrooms and an indoor pool and spa.
We are shown around the ground floor level and then head to one of their bars.
Five different complimentary cocktails and nibbles here with my fave cocktail being Marylebone Twist.
Cocktails normally are £15 each, so not for those on a budget.
Lots of great staff fussing over us.
Visit their website here for more info.
The opening picture on their website shows you their stunning atrium.

Tuesday 07 January 2020.
A famous north London music venue has been engulfed in a blaze.
Smoke and flames could be seen billowing from the scaffolding in the roof of Koko, in Camden, which is currently under refurbishment.
London Fire Brigade sent about 60 firefighters and eight fire engines to the venue on Camden High Street after they were called just before 21:00 GMT...(Monday evening)
The brigade said 30% of the roof was alight and it was "working hard" to save the rest of the building.
Oliver Cooper, a Conservative councillor who witnessed the fire, said the blaze was "under control and now being pushed back".
He added on Twitter: "Devastated by the potential loss of such a huge part of Camden's culture."
Koko was previously known as the Camden Palace and has been one of the most iconic of London's live music venues for decades.
It is currently closed , and was set to reopen in spring.
I have been there many times when it was called Koko, Camden Palace and The Music Machine.
Check on my venue search on www.raysgigs.com to see the list of the 23 shows i saw here 1977 to 1980
when it was called The Music Machine...includes Motörhead and The Clash...

The BRIT Awards have been very good at spotting new talent over the past decade.
The BRITs have announced the shortlisted acts for their Rising Star 2020 award.
The prestigious accolade - which was formerly known as the BRITs Critics' Choice award - has nominated Beabadoobee, Celeste and Joy Crookes for the prize, which recognises fresh and promising talent for the forthcoming year.
I saw Joy Crookes perform a 30 mins set at the star-studded V & A Museum summer party in 2019.

Along with Terence Donovan and Brian Duffy, Bailey captured and helped create the 'Swinging London' of the 1960s: a culture of fashion and celebrity chic. The three photographers socialised with actors, musicians and royalty, and found themselves elevated to celebrity status. Together, they were the first real celebrity photographers, named by Norman Parkinson "the Black Trinity".

A rewind to the 70s and 80s has continued a comeback, with sales of music cassettes hitting a 15-year high.
They may have been clunky, a pain to skip between songs, and often dodgy quality, but tapes are seemingly trendy again.
Music industry body the BPI said UK cassette sales reached 80,404 last year (2019), the highest annual figure since the just over 100,000 figure in 2004.
Experts put the revival down to a combination of people who bought them in their youth, and a novelty for younger music fans.

Tuesday 31 December 2019.
NYE Fireworks display party at Embankment area down by The London Eye.
Dance tunes will be playing before and after the 10/12 minutes of fireworks at midnight.
It is a £10 paid ticket for the best viewing positions, all 100,000 tickets have now been sold.
I went to it last year for the first time since it was a paid event and it was much more fun than expected.
Free travel on the tube and buses from 11.45pm on New Year's Eve, through till 4.30am on New Year's Day.
It will be shown live on BBC1 , ITV and SKY.
We were up there from 10pm to 1am.
A bit colder than last year, but not too bad.
We are in the Red Zone which is to the left of the fireworks display area.
Half the crowd seem to be overseas tourists, with loads of Japanese here.
Although there is security body searches and bag searches here , you can actually
bring in your own cans of booze.
A nice friendly atmosphere and the fireworks at midnight were great.
After the fireworks it was nice to see the 100 or so Thames party boats of different sizes
depart back to their moorings as all the buildings along the Thames were lit up.

Monday 30 December 2019.

Rock legend LEMMY sadly passed away four years ago today.
On 28 December 2015, four days after his 70th birthday, Lemmy died at his apartment from prostate cancer, cardiac arrhythmia and congestive heart failure.
Lemmy continued to record and tour regularly with Motörhead until his death in December 2015 in Los Angeles, California, where he had lived since 1990. Aside from his musical activities, he was well known for his hard-living lifestyle, which included chain-smoking and regular consumption of alcohol and amphetamines. He died on 28 December 2015.
I saw Motörhead play live around 35 times since 1975.

Friday 27 December 2019.
George Michael‘s sister, Melanie Panayiotou, was found dead on Christmas Day – on the exact third anniversary of the singer’s death.
Panayiotou, 55, was discovered at her home in Hampstead, London, on Wednesday night (December 25).
A Metropolitan Police statement said: “Police were called by London Ambulance Service at approximately 19:35hrs on Wednesday, 25 December to reports of the sudden death of a woman, aged in her 50s, at an address in Oak Hill Park, NW3.
The news comes exactly three years after George Michael was found dead at his home in Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, on Christmas Day in 2016. He “passed away peacefully at home” at the age of 53 of natural causes.
Ms. Panayiotou, a hairdresser, was close with her brother, travelling with him around the world at the height of his fame with Wham! in the 1980s and 1990s, and was heavily involved in helping manage his estate.
