Wednesday 20 October 2021. GET UP STAND UP! - The Bob Marley Musical - Press Night. The Lyric Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue, London W1. I was lucky to have seen Bob Marley play Hammersmith Odeon in June 1976. Bob Marley died of cancer on 11 May 1981...he died aged just 36. Good timing for this musical to open , as this year will be the 40th anniversary of his death. His excellent 1984 greatest hits compilation album "Legend" still sells well. "Legend" was released in May 1984 by Island Records. It is a greatest hits collection of singles in its original vinyl format and is the best-selling reggae album of all-time, with over 12 million sold in the US, over 3 million in the UK , and over 25 million copies in total sold worldwide. ---------------- I was really looking forward to seeing this musical. Several well known faces are here including... NAOMI CAMPBELL (kept her face covering on throughout the evening) GRACE JONES (also hiding behind a face covering and shades) DON LETTS ( the original punky reggae DJ) (see my dodgy selfie Facebook with him) ANDREW ROACHFORD (singer-songwriter with ROACHFORD and now with Mike & The Mechanics). OMAR (singer-songwriter) BENJAMIN ZEPHANIAH (dub poet and author ) KATHY LETTE ( author) PAUL MORLEY (wrote for NME from 1977 to 1983) and many other things after. Members of Bob Marleys family. We got complimentary rum punch cocktails in the interval in the foyer. The show was on for 2 hours 15 mins over two sets of 70 mins and 65 mins. Soooo many great Bob Marley songs performed tonight by the great cast. A well deserved full standing ovation from the crowd at the end. I will certainly go back and see it again.
